MIGRATION SAFARI PLANNING

The Great Migration Moves. Your Route Should Too.

The Great Migration is not a single place or a fixed event. It is a moving wildlife cycle across the Serengeti and beyond, shaped by rain, grazing, calving, river crossings and seasonal movement.

That is why the right safari depends first on when you are travelling.

Some months are better for Ndutu and the Southern plains. Some favour Central or Western Serengeti. Others are planned around the Northern Serengeti and the possibility of Mara River crossings.

Goldfinch Adventures helps you choose the Serengeti region, number of nights, lodge location and route flow that fit your travel month — while keeping expectations honest. Wildlife movement is never guaranteed, but good planning puts you in the strongest possible area for the season.

PLANNING GUIDE

How to Plan a Great Migration Safari Without Guessing the Region

A Great Migration safari starts with timing. The month you travel affects which Serengeti region makes sense, how many nights you need, which lodges are well placed and how realistic your expectations should be.

Best time to go

The best time depends on the migration experience you want. Southern Serengeti and Ndutu are strongest around the calving season. Western Serengeti can be relevant during seasonal movement through the corridor. Northern Serengeti is often chosen for river-crossing months. Central Serengeti can work well for strong resident wildlife and flexible routing.

Best safari parks

The Serengeti is the main migration destination in Tanzania, but the specific region matters more than the park name alone. Ndutu, Southern Serengeti, Central Serengeti, Western Serengeti and Northern Serengeti all play different roles during the year. Ngorongoro and Tarangire can add variety before or after the migration focus.

Northern Serengeti

Travel costs

Migration safaris can cost more because well-located lodges and camps in seasonal areas are in high demand. Domestic flights, longer routes, private guiding and extra Serengeti nights can also affect the price.

Route planning

A strong migration route gives you enough time in the right region instead of trying to cover too much ground. Some trips focus mainly on Serengeti. Others add Ngorongoro, Tarangire or Zanzibar depending on time, budget and travel style.

Advisor's Note

The Month Decides the Region

The biggest mistake is planning a Great Migration safari as if the herds stay in one place. The route that works in February is not the same route that works in August.

The big decisions

  • When to travel — calving season, river-crossing months, green season and dry season all create different safari possibilities.
  • Which Serengeti region to choose — Ndutu, Southern, Central, Western and Northern Serengeti each matter at different times.
  • How many nights to spend — migration safaris usually need enough time in the target area because wildlife movement is never perfectly predictable.
  • Whether to add other parks — Ngorongoro, Tarangire or Lake Manyara can add variety, but they should not weaken the migration focus.

The quiet details

  • River crossings cannot be guaranteed, even in the right season.
  • A lodge in the wrong area can cost you valuable game-viewing time.
  • Domestic flights may improve the route when the target migration region is far from Arusha.
  • Photographers may need more nights and a slower pace than standard safari travellers.

That is why we start with your dates, travel style and priorities — not with a fixed package.

  1. Is Tanzania good for a honeymoon safari?

Yes. Tanzania is one of Africa's strongest honeymoon safari destinations because it combines iconic wildlife areas, romantic lodges, private safari options and easy connections to Zanzibar.

  2. What makes a Tanzania safari luxury?

A luxury Tanzania safari usually combines private planning, high-quality lodges or camps, strong guiding, smooth logistics and carefully paced routing. It is not only about expensive accommodation.

  3. When is the best time to go on safari in Tanzania?

Tanzania is a year-round destination, but the dry season (June–October) offers the strongest wildlife viewing. Migration timing depends on the Serengeti region and month.

  4. How many days do you need for a Tanzania and Zanzibar holiday?

Most travellers should plan at least 7 to 10 days for a safari and Zanzibar trip. Shorter trips are possible, but more days allow better safari pacing and enough time to relax on the coast.

  5. Can you go on safari from Zanzibar?

Yes. Many travellers add a safari to their Zanzibar holiday by flying from Zanzibar to mainland Tanzania. Depending on your time, you can visit parks such as Mikumi, Nyerere, Tarangire, Ngorongoro or the Serengeti.

  6. Can I add cultural experiences to a Tanzania safari?

Yes. Many cultural experiences can be added before, during or after safari. The best option depends on your route, available time and how much cultural depth you want.
